Born in York in 1923, Rita started work a clerk in the Housing Department of York Council in 1939, and retired as Director in 1981. Outside work, she was active in the Scouting movement, setting up the Southlands Wolf Cub pack in 1949 and later serving as Assistant District Commissioner. A committed Christian, she was a lifelong member of Southlands Methodist Church, where she volunteered in many different capacities, particularly working with young people.
In her leisure time she enjoyed walking and sight-seeing, and spending time with family and friends. She gave a great deal of kindness and support to a number of close friends and relatives and is fondly remembered as a "surrogate auntie" and "surrogate grandma".
A service of thanksgiving for Rita's life will be held at Southlands Methodist Church, Bishopthorpe Road, York, on Thursday 12th January at 2pm followed by light refreshments.
